PerlGlass

by Sam Perlmutter

Sam Perlmutter is currently a 21 year old first year student in the scientific glass technology program at Salem Community College. He was first introduced to glass blowing when he took a hot shop class at the Maine College of Art in 2012. Captured by the movement of glass and endless possibilities, he proceeded to study flame working at Awear in Portland, Maine. After graduating high school he entered the University of Vermont mechanical engineering program, but his passion for glass continued to grow. Although he was granted a US Patent for protective ski racing gear in 2016, he was always more interested in glass than engineering. During his second year in Burlington, he got the opportunity to work at Vermont Lampworking Studios, where he ended up spending more time on the torch than going to class. He knew that he needed to make glassblowing his priority. The following summer, he committed to SCC and working with glass for a living. He has been practicing his implosion technique for one year now, and is looking forward seeing where larger, more intricate patterns will take him.
